How would you find out the type of stone used to build a house? The reason I'm asking is I want to replace some damaged stone on my house and I need to know what type of stone it is to replace it with! (The buildings Grade 2 listed so they want it replaced like for like).

Try getting a copy of the Saturday Yorkshire Post, usually someone is advertising reclaimed stone.
Matching can be big problem though, around us there are quite a few sandstone quarries, although most are now defunct, the stone can vary so much within a mile or so of the different quarries.

This is the site of probably the largest operator in the area for new stone.
Don't know if this helps, this is a sample of the above quarries stone.
