I'm due to complete on my new flat on Friday, and I'm assuming all of the services (gas/electric anyway) have been disconnected (all appliances/sanitary ware have DO NOT USE tape etc). How do I go about getting the electricity/gas turned back on - do I have to just call the companies that used to provide these, or can I call any? Will they be able to instantly turn them on over the phone, or will they have to send an engineer?

Cheers!

Phone can be switched back on at the exchange, often for free but sometimes with a reconnection fee depending how long the outgoing resident didn't pay.

All other services will need a visit, the electricity will probably have the main fuse missing for a start.

I'm not going to be connecting the phone, just the gas/electric - I was hoping it was just a case of letting them know my details and move in date! Cheers though, I guess I'll try and find out who the current suppliers are and give them a ring.

Call 08706081524 with your meter serial number together with your property's post code, and they should be able to tell you who were the last gas and electric suppliers.

Cheers Wings - if I get there and find that gas/electric can be turned back on within the property, I guess I can just call the existing providers to give them my new details and the meter readings. Guessing that would be too easy though!
