Some wood floor questions
Discussion
We've just had our kitchen extended and were thinking of tiling but now considering having wooden flooring throughout the downstairs. (the rest was going to be wood anyway just thinking of running it through into the kitchen instead of tiles)
We're looking at a dark Oak engineered floor would this sort of floor be Ok to use in a Kitchen just thinking of spillages or a flooding washing machine etc.
Would the Tredaire Broadwalk or Duralay Timbermate underlay from Here be OK? We have concrete floors so thinking these 2 have highest tog rating so help to keep the floor warmer.
Can a wood floor be fitted after kitchen units and just run the floor a bit under the cabinets before fitting the plinths?
Anyone know a rough cost per m2 for fitting?

thanks thats useful - my main concern is what would happen to wood if the washer leaked during the say and we came home to find a pool of water would that be bye bye floor or is it a case of mop up leave to dry and should be OK?
Also whether or not wood floor should be fitted before the units or whether its ok fit around them?

No point in fitting under the whole cupboard, no advantage unless you suffer from OCD, IMO.
We have engineered flooring with a lacquer finish and one of our lovely cats used it as a toilet one day while we were at work, no issues, it just sat on the surface waiting for our return home !
You also have to think how many times do you really have a bad water leak??!! Just make sure your insured!

Personally, I wouldnt put wooden flooring in a kitchen, & I sell the stuff!
However, if you must do it then put the kitchen in first then fit the floor. This will allow the timber to expand & contract which it couldnt do if it had the weight of the kitchen on top of it. Most of the problems our customers experience are caused by the lack of an expansion gap.
I have solid oak in much of my house, but put tiles in the kitchen as they contrast the floor really well & are maintenance free.
