Back door advice
Discussion
If I posted a topic with that title in the lounge it would be a nightmare....
We need a new back door - the existing one looks like something from a 1980s lunatic asylum, it's very grim, plus the lock is a right bugger to use.
Anyone got any comments about price vs performance when comparing wood and uPVC? I'd prefer wood, which as I understand it should be a bit cheaper too no?

Also have a look at composite doors. The look of timber with the maintenance of uPVC

I had to look at this topic, as I was shockked no one had responded in the most predictable way - I didn't notice it was in HGDIY.
Now, on a practical note, I think if you get a quality wood door, it'll probably work out as expensive, if not more so than upvc. My Dad had a couple of hardwood (softwood is why wood initially appears cheaper, until you start investigating more closely) doors of 'ok' quality from a reputable supplier where the hardness in a couple of areas wasn't the same as the rest of the door - these rotted within a few years and the entire door had to be replaced. Look carefully before buying!
Upvc is also easier to get a good seal with, as long as the frame is also Upvc. Looks pants compared to a good solid wood one, though.
