Could be a Varilight

If not is the manufacturers name not on the back of the module?

def. varilight. Other brands will use varilight modules. this is what the instruction leaflet from a conveniently boxed one just next to me say:
press dimmer button 6 times.
light will dim on then down.
within 15 secs and 1 meter away hold remote button down for 2 secs pointing directly at eye
light will dim up and down.
repeat remote instruction above. If successful light will dim up and down x2. should now work.

Tappy six times lights up and down...
Repeat infinitum.
It's so annoying. Any specific tips or tricks to get it to work? Is my Remote the wrong sort or something

Tap the button six times (lights will go up and down)
Hold the remote button you want to control the light for 2secs (ish) from around 6" away
IIRC the lights will then cycle up and down
All finished
If you still haven't got it to work, I've just programmed mine, and got it to work ok:
1. Tap the switch six times (about a second apart). The lights will turn on and off.
2. Within a metre from the switch, point your remote at the switch, and press and hold the button you want to use to control the light for at least 2 seconds then release. (lights go on and off)
3. Next, once again, point the remote at the switch and press and hold the same button on the remote for at least 2 seconds. (lights go on and off and then go dim to bright and back).
Your selected button on the remote should now operate the lights.

ETA:
Not sure if relevant, but what type of remote are you using? I remember from a previous experience re. type of IR remotes that if it's a cable (or possibly Sky) remote, it may use a different type of encoding to a standard TV/CD player etc. remote. If your remote isn't suitable, you could always get a specific Varilight remote (for around £8) from the likes of Homebase etc..

You may be right, but it's laughable really isn't it. You could add 'turn round three times and say Abracadabra and it wouldn't be much more stupid. Technology is great but I won't be a slave to it; I'd rip the f2. ker out and put a switch in - and then you get exercise operating it - though I agree possibly not as much as the above fiasco! How does it go again? 'Left leg in...' no hang on...Edited by Simpo Two on Tuesday 23 March 09:59

You are missing the key MO for remote light switches...
ker out and put a switch in - and then you get exercise operating it- New lady friend
- Sat on sofa
- 'Magically' dim lights down
- 'Oh' <heaving bossom> 'What happened to the lights, how did you do that?!'
- I know how to press all the right buttons

(Except the programming sodding button!)
Sounds like you have the same issue. I've got around this by having the ceiling lights and two wall lights controlled by different switches. Press one button to switch off the ceiling lights and another to turn on the wall lights.
Instant "mood" lighting without moving from the sofa. I can also turn off the lights in the kitchen from the sofa!
