Hi all,

Have to hurry up and make a final decision on colours/worktops on a kitchen that is going into the house I'm purchasing. However, I'm a bit stuck on ideas.

I am almost sure the kitchen will be glossy white units, but am undecided on the worktop. I am thinking of either granite, or quartz. Whilst black would match nicely I'm sure, it's not happened (so says the other half).

Can anyone advise what would suit nicely as a worktop? I'm thinking along the lines of a light grey, very plain and would match?

Any advice/help appreciated.

Thanks for the reply. It's not really a "compact" kitchen, it has one large window facing into it on one end, and a large set of bay windows at the other end of the room (its a kichen/dining and living area open plan space).

I don't think I want something as "patterned" as your granite, if you know what I mean - yours a nice classical style, but I'm after something quite contemporary and modern.

I'm afraid I don't have pictures, but here are two 3d images.

If you imagine beyond these images, there is an area for dining/living then some bay windows at the other end.

I really like the idea of a Zinc worktop, and will probably look seriously into it when it comes time to redo the kitchen. Goes a nice warm grey colour over time and apparently pretty easy to care for.

Yes I saw those pictures, looked amazing and something I would love to do, but not sure if I could be brave enough to do such a bold colour.

If I go for a grey coloured worktop, I'm thinking it would leave this more colourful option open as well as something more plain if thats what I decide to do at a later date?

Thanks for the help. The washing machine/dryer will be in the utility room next door.

An underslung sink is a must!

Already put the foot down. Black is out, but I think I can sneak grey in smile

Granite looks like GIALLO VENEXIANO or very similar

Whether you go with Granite or Quartz you should go and see the slabs. Once you buy them they'll last for ever so make sure you spend wisely.

Virtually any colour except white and cream will work with your white high gloss.

One of our favourites with white high gloss is Brown Antique Granite especially with waterfall fascia.

Ihave the most amazing greeny granite - it is really thick and amazing. I have matched it with a farrow and ball painted units. I think in blue-grey or similar (need to check the chart). ANyway we were going to have black granite then this stuff turned up - it was an offcut from someone else's house (must have been huge given we have a pretty large kitchen ). It's different and it suits our house - country cottage/house. So sometimes you have to be open to different options

if you want grey, why not go for polished concrete, done on the same basis as concrete and if you want bling, led lights can be moulded while being made

I have shown my kitchen a number of times but it may give you some ideas. We have a white Corien worktops and green glass splashbacks. The Corien you can get in a number of colors and can be shaped anyway you want,. The glass is also a great solution as it is easy to keep clean and very swish looking:

My units are also under lit with RGB LED's which gives a very cool colour changing glow in the evenings:

I just installed a new oak kitchen with blue pearl granite - it's simply stunning, particularly with nice downlighters. Just imho....

Hmm the glass splashbacks look nice. Can anyone link to a supplier that they would recommend?

I used the London Glass Company at http://www.thelondonglass.co.uk But if you just enter glass splashback into Google you will find a number of suppliers.

I used Maldonglass.co.uk for mine.
They're coming back to survey for a glass wall in our wet room on Monday.

I went direct to ALM GLASSWORKS, UNIT 4E, RIVERSIDE AV WEST, LAWFORD CO11 1UX MANNINGTREE, ESSEX. Phone: 01206 398003; Alan is the boss.

You can have any colour you like as it's spray-painted on the back. They can also do any shape - a template is the most idiot-proof but I used a technical drawing. The only thing you can't have is an internal right-angle - it needs to be 5mm radius to prevent cracking.

Here's a detail of mine - I chose 'ordinary' glass because I liked the greeny/blue effect in front of the white back; however you can have it clear:

Just had a quick flick and there are some very nice designs...where do glass splashbacks fit costwise?

We need to do a "quick cheap fix" that will last up to 5 years...and that looks like quite an effective way to do it. The existing tiles definitely need to go...

Has anyone seen the idea plastic splashbacks in use?

I have a contact in a sign company and so tried Perspex to start with, but it started cracking on internal corners even as I collected it, so we scrapped the idea.

My glass splashbacks (three sections) were about £600, but it will depend entirely on size and complexity, eg corners, curves and cutouts for sockets. Ask Alan for a price.
