Fridge smells but I don't know why...

Fridge is whiffy, I've given it a proper clean out but still smells. There is a drain hole at the back with some sort of dip stick which says 'clean periodically'. I guess that means prod around the dipstick?
Well I've done that and no change.
Any ideas?

Slice some lemons and leave them in there for a day or so.. they will help neutralise any nasty odours (so long as you're sure everything else is clean)

Yep. Just don't leave the lemon near any eggs (unless you like lemon flavoured omelette, poached egg etc...)

But I think the smell is coming from the fridge itself, not any left over food.

Leave a tub of bicarbonate of soda open inside the fridge, it absorbs odours.

A wipe down with a bicarb solution will cure this. Itll even stop an unused freezer from smelling...

Is there a drip-tray around the back (not necessarily inside, it may be physically around the back). This may have stale/stagnant water in it which will whiff.

maybe something spilled at some point (cream is a favorite) run down the drain hole and now simmerring nicely on top of the compressor!
need to get behind it and clean off the tray sitting on top of the compressor.

If you have cats, also check the tray on top of the compressor....... for dead mice !!

Another vote for the evaporation tray on top of the compressor. Usually it can cope with run-off from the chiller plate but if the drain hole gets blocked and then cleared the resultant flood of water and bits of food will 'stew' on top of the compressor producing a nasty niff with no obvious source.

It got in there somehow. There will be a way to gain access to the rear of the unit (fnarr-fnarr) either through an adjacent cupboard or by removing a couple of screws and pulling it out (fnarr again!)

I'd personally try the wipe out with bicarb and other things first then go at it!

Pour a small amount of bleach into the drain hole, that should kill any odours from the drip tray.

Also is there a vent under your fridge (in the section of cabinet that runs under the doors, you usually find a vent in built-in appliances, it might just pull out) - you could access thr deip tray from there? Might be easier than removing the fridge
