We seem to be having a problem with our gas boiler which is a Worcester Greenstar 24i

It has been gradually losing pressure. We had to repressurise the system yesterday as the needle on the gauge had dropped into the Red.We use a key underneath the boiler and it then spat out some Brown watery liquid from the overflow pipe outside(see below).I dont think I have seen it do this before but Im pretty certain this should not be happening and I notice the pressure is slowly dropping again. Can I ask what you people think ?

Thanks for reading

The safety relief will blow at 3 Bar. It sounds like it's leaking past the seating, but it may be due to a pressure vessel failure.
Are you convinced that is the source of the leak?? Could there be another one.
The water isn't good. Was it flushed prior to that boiler being fitted?

If the needle drops but there is no water from that relief pipe then you have a leak.
Check exposed pipework and around the boiler itself. If it's somewhere concealed you may fix it with Fernox F4 or similar, otherwise it's a tedious potential floor digging up exercise.

Thanks Ferg

They have flushed the system previously with some kind of solution. There is a sticker on the boiler which shows Sentinel X100 cleanser & X100 inhibitor on 24/02/09.

We had problems previously where we had sporadic hot water because dirt had got into the system due they think to the leak so they fitted a new(I think)heat exchanger. They have also fitted an inline filter around 6mths ago and that particular problem went away.

This is a pic of the relief pipe.

It might well be the pressure vessel.
This is designed to take up the expansion when you heat. If it has ruptured internally you will see the pressure rise quickly when it heats from cold until it opens the relief valve, of course then it will drop back down when cold and often stop the boiler from operating.
I would let it cool, fill it from the filling loop to, say, 1.5 Bar. Check the relief. Then see if it drops. DON'T run the boiler, obviously.
