Hi,

I’ve never had any contents insurance. I’ve only ever lived in a couple of new apartments, up off the ground floor and very secure and I’ve never really had much worth insuring. Now we have our house (building is insured through a family buy-to-let policy) and we’ve started buying a few goodies we need to start worrying about insurance.

I have bought a second mountain bike (Cannondale Carbon Rush, just over a year old) which now lists new at about £3,700 I believe, I’ve also bought a new Nikon camera and two lenses which have set me back over £1,400. We also have the usual iPod Touches, mobile phones etc so we would require a policy that will cover quite expensive items away from home and, importantly, with accidental cover. Is new for old standard for these sort of items or not?

The policy will also need to cover the new Apple iMac, home appliances, my home cinema system, carpets, furniture etc. so I’ve calculated I will need around £20,000 worth of cover. Should be enough I think as the building is insured separately.

As I’m a complete newbie when it comes to contents insurance, will I be looking for a specific policy or company that will protect the fairly high value of items that will need to be covered away from home? Do most companies have a standard cycle cover amount of say £1,000? Would they enforce specific restrictions on how the bike is stored at home do you think?

I know I will find all this information out by speaking to a few companies, but I’m pretty sure most of you would have experience here and would be able to point me in the right direction and save me a bit of time! Also, I don’t want to mess up and buy a policy that doesn’t cover me for everything.

Thanks,

Dan
