In the wrong hands, I would suggest that a roller can cause more problems than it solves. It may squash the lumps, but also the troughs (sp). I'm no expert, but you may be better to top dress the troughs rather than that fix the peaks.
Roller also compresses the soil, which isnt great.

Rollers smooth out the bumps and hollows into smooth bumps and hollows rather than removing them. Depending on how big they are, you can cut a X in the turf, chop under with a spade and peel back 4 triangles, then remove or add soil as appropriate. It is a pain in the bum to do this though, but little at a time will get there eventually.

+1 agree, place a stright edge, 3ft level for example on lawn, imagine that is the face of the roller, now what happens to all the troughs in the middle of the level/roller?Roller also compresses the soil, which isnt great.
