Hi guys, am having an extension done at the moment (doing it myself with help)

The external walls are blockwork, but will obviously be rendered. Are there any particular blocks that are more suitable for rendering than others?

Cheers

DB.

Tarmac are one manufacturuer. They have a range of blocks called Durox which are ideal. They are white in appearance and have a textured finish for applying render etc.

Textured blocks are most suitable for rendered applications. Just ensure you have a dpc and if necessary use concrete blocks below ground level

I always spec concrete blocks for an external skin to receive a render finish

+1.
DONT use Durox and just flush the joints, do not point-in.

Always use 7N rather than 3.5N blocks: less risk of shrinkage cracking on the render.

Is rendering something that a capable DIY could attempt ?
I think I'd like to try it on the yard walls at the rear house, the paint over them.

feel free to attempt it, it's a similar technique to plastering. If you can do a decent job of plastering a whole wall then it shouldn't be an issue.

It's a skilled job that takes a while to master but for a garden wall I'm sure you could get results you are happy with.

Happy to write a little step by step if you want.

Blatant thread hijack! - If you wouldn't mind writing that step by step, I know I'd find it useful with some work I need to do. Thanks. biggrin

Agreed - a 'Dummies Guide to ...' would be great. Personally I'm not looking for a pristine finish, something a little more 'rustic' would be fine. Cheers smile
