Why does my hot water cylinder have 3 side pipes and 1 top pipe?

Usually there are 2 side pipes (boiler hot water coil in and out) and a top pipe (hot water outflow to taps).

Innit?

Errr - that comes in at the base of the cylinder in both types.

The 'side' pipes are on the other side of the cylinder from the cold supply.

It probably has a secondary tapping. This might be for a shower or similar hot requirement, or it may be a return from a hot water circulator.
