I live in a 1930s house. I understand that every room in the house at some stage had a gas fire.

1) Recently, whilst decorating I noticed two capped gas pipes sticking out of the floor boards. My builder lifted the floor board and turned the pipe so it doesn't stick out anymore. Does anyone know whether a capped off pipe like this is safe? I recently replaced my boiler and the plumber mentioned that I only have two gas connections-one to the boiler and the other to thr living room gas fire. So I'm assuming there is no problem but it's possible that the pipes for the living room gas fire may be connected to the bedrooms upstairs.

2) The bedroom, above the living room (which has a gas fire), also has a chimney which has a small weird ventilation thing on it. Does anyone know know what this is for? I assume it vents the gas fire but to do so in s bedroom is dangerous. I've now decorated the room too so if you've any ideas on how to block it off for good, do let me know.

If the pipe is disconnected there should be no problems,if the pipe is live turning it may have disturbed a joint and a soundness test should be carried out.

The vent will be there to allow the flue to breath so preventing damp. If you are worried get an gas safe plumber to service the fire. Do this anyway and you should get the soundness test as part of the service.
