Heloo all.

I've got an asbestos roofed concrete section garage that I'm going to have to make smaller to allow for an extension. I'm intending on essentially unbolting it and removing the front 6 panels then reinstating some kind of door as the existing one is fooked. It'll then just be a temporary garden shed.

But, what do I do with the roof, will it kill me dead.

You'll probably find that as long as it's asbestos cement that one of your local council tips will have a skip where you can dispose of it for free. You'll need to dismantle it carefully without breaking any of the sheets (with prefab garages it's normally easier to cut the bolts on the inside rather than trying to unscrew them) and double bag the sheets before taking them to the tip. Last time I did this I just bought a roll of builders polythene and a bumper pack of parcel tape and wrapped the sheets in that.

As long as it's asbestos cement sheets (being a prefab garage it's highly likely) and you're careful not to break the sheets then it's not particularly high risk. You don't need to be licenced to dismantle this stuff which is why the council normally provide skips for DIYers.

Talk to your local council. They will have a procedure in place. There will be a specific container at a local tip. Also, you may well have to register the car journey with them.

The local council will come and collect it..... eventually.

When I removed the sheets from my garage it took them about 4 weeks before they came to collect, and that was only after a phone call to them after 3.5 weeks saying if they didnt come and get it within two days, I would start breaking it up and putting it in the wheelie bin smile

(Obviously dont break it up and put it in the wheelie bin as when fractured it can be pretty nasty stuff - be careful when taking it off and dont let the nails/screws get pulled through it as the sheets will crack - pull out, or unscrew each fastener and take them off as full sheets - much less hassle in the long run)

Did something similar a few years ago. Careful when you talk to the council. If it's more than about 2 sheets they could class it as hazardous trade waste and force you to take it to a 'Transfer Station' where they'll weigh it and charge you accordingly.

Thats a bit stupid isn't it. How likely is anyone to be disposing of only 2 sheets. Suppose it just means you have to make multiple visits are get friends/family to take a couple of sheets each for you.

Cheers chaps.

Just rang the council and they will take it at only one site in the city. Costs £19.01 up to 100kg worth.

They are only open to take the stuff between 9am - 3.30pm Mon-Fri so I'll have to take half a day off.

Good to see my council tax is being utitlised so efficiently. Why the chuff don't they open on a Sat morning!!! and why won't they take it for free??!! Tossers!

Because it's special waste, needs special handling and costs an absolute fortune to dispose of, how would you like that lot X the number of people in your borough added to your council tax bill. Under £200 per ton is extremely cheap, live with it.

I agree with jagracer on this, and make no mistake asbestos kills, it has no discrimination, you need to take all precautions and wear the appropriate PPE and if you don't know what PPE is or know what is required leave it alone!

You sure. I rand today and they only gave me the number for Kirkstall??

Doesn't make a right lot of difference though really.

Oh and it was only a minor rant re the cost involved, it'd be nice if it were free though smile

Oh and I have a "proper" respirator issued to me in case we had a flu pandemic (I work for the NHS). Might as well make use of it.

Spray the sheets down with water too. If they do break then the water will hold down the dust.

Break it up and bury it in the garden.

And before I get shot down in flames - it's legal as long as you tell the next owners you have done just that.

I had a similar experience when I bought our commercial property - the previous owner had legally buried sufficient to cover a 2000sq ft building, but he 'forgot' to tell me. Nothing illegal in burying it, simply illegal not to tell me.

Cost over £40k to have it removed at his cost yes

May do, but it depends if you have any plans to sell in the near future.
