.....and some 30 x 30 x 5mm equal angle. Surely all we need is some mesh to make a great BBQ ready to host some friends for the world cup, right?

Well it seems we were correct. Take the 40 gallon drum, cut it in half, voila, a 60 x 85cm BBQ base. Now to cut the angle into 750mm lengths to use as legs (rather tham use the wooden horse originally planned for). Done.

Now weld (tack) the legs to the base. This is where things get interesting. Welder hasn't been used for 10 years. First two legs tack on no problem. "ahh it's looking good Dad, lets get the other side on then we can adjust to the correct angles and weld fully". Welder decided to stop feeding the wire when welding. After 20 mins of faffing about and alot of swearing it's decided to work but being temperemental, still it's working. Dad - "Lets just get the legs on and see how it looks". [Weld] "leg on?" "yes" "ok next one".

[we...wel....we...weldddddd..we..wel]

"for fks sake rolleyes, is that on?"
"yes"
"ok lets turn it over and have a look"

Dad picks it up by the part which has just been welded

shout "tt"
me - rofl
dad - "ps off, be warned it's hot smile "

Pick it up and turn it over. So after almost 2 hours (mainly due to the welder) it looks good, all the legs are equally on the floor and the base is sitting pretty much level, you can't quite tell as the ground is on a slope, now all we need is some mesh for the grill. Here's a pic of how it looks. What you think?

here is what I got for my troubles when turning it over (yes, there is skin missing hehe )

I think the wooden horse is going to be used.

Think yourself lucky, mate of mine cut a 50 gallon drum in half and it exploded ( it had had diesel in at one time ) and lost one thumb, a chunk of thigh and a testicle....

He may of ended up with only one bk, and had to endure endless Hitler jokes, but he fathered twins 3 years afterwardssmile

This one had hydraulic oil in it - is that explosive? Well it didn't anyway.

If its had hydraulic oil in in I reccomend you put plenty of wood in and get it really hot to burn out any residue because otherwise the food will taste vomit

You need to grind down to solid clean metal to mig weld, and you need an equally good earth connection too. And you can't weld angle iron to a piece of rusty thin drum anyway! What were you thinking????

Go to B&Q and buy a proper £25 barbeque, and leave the metalworking to people who have at least a vague idea what they are doing. hehe

You'd feel terrible if the whole thing collapsed and burned a few people during the barbie, yes??

What you should have done is weld up a frame on which the half drum would sit. Bloody amateurs.

KH was all down to bare metal and prepped properly, welder is fooked. To be fair it's older than me by a considerable margine. Plus the drum is about 3mm thick.

Meh, they all know that when they come round here they are in danger of injury.

EG I did think of that but I didn't have enough sturdy material lying around for a cradle.

But, but, but, it looks like a pile of junk tossed on the floor. It doesn't look welded to me. In fact it looks like half an oil drum resting on some rusty angle iron laying on the floor. confused

Oil drums are 18swg steel, about 1mm, not 3mm.

I know, that's why my post was supposed to be humerous because the welding failed and the tacks let go and the whole lot fell appart.

I know they are, This drum is weird, seriously, way thicker than 1mm wall.

A couple of service ramps to keep it off the ground, some twisted chicken wire to construct a variable height grill, a water spray to dampen any fat flares, and the job's a good-un.
