Just bought a set of wooden garden furniture that's supposed to be oiled from time to time - seems to have come "pre-oiled" as it feels a bit greasy.

Presumably it's OK sitting out if it rains, but is there any reason why I shouldn't let it stand on grass? Will it rot the legs? Eventually it will be on decking but not any time soon!

Eventually yes - though hardwood will last much longer than softwood.

Tuck it up in the garage/shed, or under a waterproof cover over the winter. The rest of the time it'll be ok outside. Oil it once a year or more if you can be bothered.

As stated above it's hardwood so it'll last ages.

+1

It's winter wet that does for wooden garden furniture. Having said this we have a 20+ year old oak bench that sits on the grass (no-where to put it in winter) which is doing well. Every now and then I stand the legs in a pot of wood preservative then turn it upside down to dry out. Otherwise our wooden furniture lives in a shed from about Oct to May.

Thanks guys

I have left the table out as it's on slabs but have put the chairs in the garage until we have our decking sorted. They'll all go in the shed during the winter.

Just realised we have a garden bench that sits out all weathers anyway! Gave it a coat of preservative last year and it's still looking pretty good!
