I'm replacing a shower pump and Screwfix and Toolstation both stock Salamander shower pumps. It's not a brand I've heard of, are they any good?

Salamander are well known and respected but have a reputation for being fussy over installation if the warranty is to be valid.

Ferg will be along with more info soon no doubt!

As Simpo says, their installation instructions are very specific and need to be adhered to if you ever intend claiming on the warranty.

These MAY (depending on the pump) involve 100 gallons storage in the roof, careful positioning of outlets relative to the ballvalve, maximum temperature of the hot water..... all of which other manufacturers tend to be more flexible about.

I had a Salamander pump in the place I've just sold. This replaced another brand which failed after a couple of years and the difference was quite significant - more powerful for the same rating and a hell of a lot quieter (I can't remember the name of the old pump, but it had a purple casing).
The salamander pump I installed was designated a 'whole house pump' and supplied pressurised hot water for the entire house and hot+cold for the shower.

A word of warning though, I am looking to put one in the new place and also had a look on screwfix who had one up for £225, a quick google had this down to £135 for the same model so shop around!

I'm on my 3rd of these type of pumps, I've had no end of problems with them. It seems to constantly leak from the crappy plastic fittings that seem to undo themselves at will, this is possibly down to the way it's installed though. One had to be replaced because it was blowing fuses, then the replacment for that leaked from the pressure gauge window on one of the flow modules. It's also VERY noisy, if anyone has any tips on how to quieten it down I would be very happy.

Having said all this the engineers from Salamander are very good, and I would echo what has been said about the install instructions and warranty.

I don't know of any alternatives, but I do know that the mob that fitted mine changed to a different manaufacturer shortly after ours was installed, sorry can't recall the name.

As an alternative have you looked at Stuart Turner pumps?

On recommendation from my FIL (plumber for over 40 yrs).

Always faultless, fitted to all my houses over the years and BTLs, never given me any probs.

ST are always willing to supply parts (at a cost, obviously) but at least the things are repairable!)

I've used three Salamander pumps over the years - great piece of kit.
