Following on from my other thread about the cost of my not yet started extension I just wondered if anyone had any experience of getting a gas meter moved for cheap.

Northern Gas Networks have quoted my £730, yes SEVEN HUNDRED AND THIRTY quid!!!......to move a gas meter 1.5m nearer to the supply from the inside to the outside of the same wall. It's a days work, if that, FFS!! mad

The letter states this
"It may be possible to obtain an alternative quotation from other Gas Transporters or Utility Infrastructure Providers for the provision of this work.

It then goes on to suggest looking here
http://www.lloydsregister.co.uk/scheme_search.php?...
They all look like big contractors though, not going to be fussed with me.
Also suggests looking at another few online places and I'll have to ring them tomorrow.

Just wondered if anyone has experience of this and it it just a case of having to lube up and take it like a girl?

sounds about the same as i was quoted just to move a meter across a side door in a garage for an extension . Then they suggested a gasafe guy to do the pipework from the new meter to the boiler on top frown

I was quoted £550 in 2005 because I was pissed off about them moaning they couldn't get access to read the meter and I was replacing the concrete floor the pipe came through, I thought I'd get it put outside. Feck me if I didn't nearly fall over when they told me how much.

i had to move a lekky meter from the hallway (really attractive!) to under the stairs.

if its a move of lesss than one metre its free, but mine was 2.5m. because they say that the new connection can't be spliced inside your property, it has to have a new feed run in from outside. as the supply comes in the front door, this meant digging up the path, front step and a channel through the hallway.

quote from YEB was £1500. fk me! ended up doing all the monkey work myself but was still charged 350 for a bit of wire and 30mins of their sparky's time.

Takes the pi$$.

YEDL have quoted £520 to re-site the meter and reroute the supply cable as required (it's clipped externally).

Again, it's a mornings work for a spark and his mate.

It's also the reason that a lot of them get moved without the supplier's knowledge.

Couldn't you get it moved 90cm 3 times? Total distance moved - ~2.5m, cost £0 idea

Actually...there is. When he comes to do a site visit, offer him a cuppa and when he's done looking and measuring just ask him if he'll do it for cash, £100 usually does it. He goes away and writes in his report that you've changed your mind and either him or another guy will be round a couple of days later, trust me...more often than not, it does the trick.

It's a brave man that live joints into the supply cable though.

Do you have his number?

I'd expect you would get royally fvcked in the bum sideways if caught tampering with this stuff no?

Have a camera handy. Then at least you'll be able to get some impressive aerial views of your house from about 500 feet hehe

On a serious note, a friend of my neighbour was electrocuted two weeks ago while working on a gas boiler. Leaves a widow and three children, so don't take chances.

Big fines yes.

Live cable jointers work all over the country every day however.

One used to work for me, you've just apparently go to know what you're doing.

He was working one day with a chap jointing in the rain, didn't notice the hole filling up with water.

Bang.

400amps killed him instantly and melted the side cutters in his pocket.

Live cable jointers and hot linesmen will always have my utmost respect.

I was quoted £400 by eon to fit a meter in one of my properties. Called British Gas, they fitted it for free and it only took 10 minutes!

Had a letter from British Gas saying my meter (lead piping) is illegal and needs changing.

Am ignoring them so far - recent renovation of house by Corgi registerd folks threw up nothing.

Do I need to pay these thieves anything?

I thought anything upto the meter was the responsibilty of the shipper/ utility company. My parents had their electric meter changed and that was done FOC. If it's a mandatory change, I can't see how they can make you pay?

Been told this is a BAD idea.

BCO may well question the meter move and want to see documentation. If that happens I won't get my extension signed off without getting the gas board involved, who would likely bend me over big time!
