Voile/net curtains and sash windows

The front of our house faces directly on to the village high street. The windows take up most of the front of the room and are approx 6' height by 9' across (x2). Currently we have no nets or curtains which makes the room very exposed to people looking in at any time of the day.

We would like to gain some privacy by hanging voile/muslin curtains (I cannot stand traditional nets) but I'm unsure if we should hang them the entire 6' height of the window or from the top of the bottom sash only (4').

If the voiles are thin enough, then go the whole window....as the light will still stream through.

Oh why not get some sort of stain glassed panels to sit in front of the lower part of the windows?

Lower half only!!

We've got the same problem and are going for the "etched glass" route (www.brume.co.uk)

We have the bottom half only as we hate nets but needed some privacy.

We've got full length cotton voiles that from the inside are practically see through; from the outside, and including the reflection from the glass, they're opaque. We've got shutters for when it's dark.

I read an excellent article in the Times Magazine years ago about Purlfrost but I was so impressed with their offerings, I kept the link to the company. I've not needed to use them yet, but I can't stand nets either and this could possibly be an option.
