Engine block with a piece of glass works for me.

Any idea of budget / size requirements?

any criteria? Old, New, Glass, wood?

otherwise all i can suggest is make one out of an MX5 Engine Block hehe

On a more helpful note, have a hunt around on 't interweb, but the likes of Harrods, Selfridges, Heales etc tend to do anual warehouse clearances of stock. we got some fantastic stuff about 6 years ago from the 'Arrods one all at about 80% off.

Buy a design classic wink

http://www.knoll.com/products/product.jsp?prod_id=...

Knoll Tulip Coffee Table - depending on 'top' around a grand - bit more for the marbles, but a sexy well sought after table which will retain a good proportion of its value if you decide to sell years later.

OR

Noguchi Coffee Table, again around a grand (many shops doing 20-25% off though, so aim for £800 in black ash). Another design classic.

^^^^^ if you like the Noguchi, you can buy a reproduction for a couple of hundred quid - http://www.swankyrooms.co.uk/isamu-noguchi-coffee-...

Looks quite tight for a large one - have you thought about a nest of tables?

How about the Old Colonial Compact Nest from Ercol - would fit nicely with your decor, too.
