Chaps,

A quickie.

The light in our basement as ceased to start. If I flick the starter then it comes on.

I am assuming the starter is duff.

The starter says "155/500 4-65W" on the side of it.

Will this:

.... be a suitable replacement? (It calls itself a 4/80W starter.)

I think the tube is 5ft long.

Thanks!

Pigs, isn't it? At work, you struggle to keep your eyes open. 8 hours later, just when you need to be dozing off, you find yourself wide awake.

Work? If only! Although Jobsearch is nearly a full time job in itself. Anyway, to bed with book. Hope the starter works.

Sorry to hijack the thread but on a similar topic, are there flourescent lights that do not use those screw in starters? I have a tube that is reluctant to start - turning the light switch on and off a few times seems to get it going eventually. I took the whole fitting apart and cannot see one of those starters. There is a metal box of gubbins inside the fitting that could perhaps be supposed to perform that function. Is this an older-style fitting and what are my options to correct the problem - junk the whole fitting and put a more modern one with removeable starters in?

Probably the best bet, although it is possible the tube is on it's way out.

The cost of replacing the box of gubbins is about the same as a new fitting,if they are still available that is.

Thanks for the reply. I'm pretty sure I tried a different tube (known to be working and newish) in it a few weeks ago and it didn't improve matters noticeably. So there are such things as fittings that don't use those screw in starters then?

Many thanks for that link - really learnt a lot. Sounds like I have a semi-resonant start and it mentions that the T8 tubes don't work that well with it. I'll have a look around and see if I have a T12 spare to try, otherwise I may just junk the whole fitting. Thanks all for your help.
