Best fly trap/exterminator

Please help, we currently have our doors and windows open during the day. For any potential thieves reading, we are at home when this is happening! Trouble is we back out on the fields with horses in so tend to get houseflys/blue bottles type flies coming in. I have made sure there is no food sources etc around but they just come in, buzz about, land on the kitchen surfaces and make me mad with bleach/disinfectant etc (I have this horrid picture of a fly puking on something!)

Has anyone used one of these UV zapper things? Are they any good? Or do I just need one of the old fashioned sticky tape (ecceles cake strips as we knew them)?

Or is there any other effective measures I can use, swatters are ok but make a mess.

I am in a similar position to you with flies, they seem to congregate under the lampshade and fly in formation for hours at a time.

I bought a UV fly killer which has not worked, they simply fly in formation around that like roller skaters at a 70s roller disco, it does however kill mosquito and moths. I tried fly spray but found I had to spray it all the time, once I killed the flies I'd open the door and a new load of the little bds would take up position dancing around the UV light. lastly I bought those sticky rolls, they look bloody horrible but once said miniature roller disco revelers land to take a rest they stick, I'll have to put up with the rolls until I can get a fly screen for the door.

we have the same problem ...and have a UZ zapper thing in the kitchen all the time in summer ...it does work, but never as fast as you like ...hand held tennis racket style electric zapper is more satisfying to use

red top bag traps work, but you need somewhere out of sight but still nearby to hang them...got one on the back of the shed at the bottom of the garden...you wouldnt want a bag of 3000 dead flies near your back door for instance

Thanks, a tennis racket zapper sounds like fun! Not to sure about have the smell of dead flies hanging about but if it works, I'll try anything.

Those red top things absolutely stink ! Very unpleasant. They work by attracting the flies with a bait which smells like something has died. They do seem to work though, although I do wonder whether they end up attracting more flies than would normally be in your garden.

I've been using these cassette things in the house, apparently they also work outdoors

Homebase are doing them for about £4 at the moment.

Apparently plants such as lemon balm, basil, lavender, mint, jasmine and anything citrus are natural deterents.

Try the old jam jar with an inch or so of 50/50 balsamic vinegar/water plus splash of washing up liquid in, that's the important bit as it breaks the water tension and Mr Fly drowns, mwahahaha. Cover the top with cling film and poke a few fly sized holes in it it. Not sure if blue bottles go for it but it's very effective for the annoying little buggers we get around here (we back on to arable farmland). Slightly gross if it all evapourates leaving you with a jar encrusted with flies, erm, not that I've ever let that happen of course, must have seen that on youtube!

The tennis raquets are good when you get a solid strike but there's a lot of tiring waving about involved. I've also heard that they're (and the other zapper types) aren't that hygenic as microscopic bits of fly get blasted around when they go pop.
