Has anyone got any tips from removing rust? Is there something I can put the bolts in over night?

Some say diet coke.

Some say vinegar.

Any other suggestions. Minimum effort maximum gain please

Scott.

I didn't think weak acid removed rust - but it might remove the metal from underneath!

Wire brush for me, either by hand or on a grinder if that's easier. Then rub with 3-in-1 oil to help stop the rust coming back.

What are the nuts and blots for as if you think you will need to get them undone again new ones might be a better idea.

Citric acid powder is the best stuff i know. You can get it from brewery supply shops. Just dissolve in some water and drop in your rusty stuff.
Takes about 12 hours but works wonders and is totally safe to use.

If you can't get citric acid lemon juice is a good alternative just takes a little longer.

Vinegar seems to work pretty well:

Diesel works remarkably well if you leave stuff in it for a few days.

Milk stone remover, available at any farm supplies store. About £12 for 5L.

Its phospheric acid, the stuff that they put in fizzy drinks.
Can be used straight or diluted (say 3:1)

Leave parts to soak in a plastic container overnight or 24hrs if required.

Its quite a few bits - I am taking a kart apart and rather than buy the specialist nuts and bolts everytime I take some off I'd rather give it a clean otherwise it will end up costing twice as much.

It will be dry stored and may go out in the wet only a few times a year so I am not worried about furture rust issues.
