Reference on tenancy agreement – quick question!

A friend has asked me to be a reference on a tenancy agreement for a flat he’s looking to move into. He’s good bloke and normally, I’d not hesitate.
However, the guy is an alcoholic and in an on-off relationship with a completely bonkers-mad woman that regularly results in both giving each other slaps (more her giving him wallops it has to be said!). The police are regular visitors to his current abode.
Not seen the agreement but just wondering what comeback there is on me should the landlord decide he is too much of pain to allow – which sadly, I fear is likely.
