We get a lot of these in at work:



Which apparently dont sting or bite and are known as wood wasps or horntails.

If you see one thats bigger than this, they are pretty bloody scary !

We regularly see them at around 3 inches total length.

That's not a sting, it's an ovipositor (thing that lays eggs).

Pretty harmless I think.

I know that NOW, its easy not to be scared ubtil the bloody things in your face, trust me.

BTW, they dont like 2x1 round the head !

It's always funny though when YOU know they're harmless, but whoever you're with at the time doesn't hehe

It's an Ichneumen fly, there are lots fo different kinds, they are are parasites and prasitoids of caterpillars. They lay their eggs in the living caterpillar which then hatch and eat it slowly from the inside out before pupating in the carcass and emerging. They won't do this to you though unless you are a caterpillar - well hopefully not anyway.
