BT Line Rental - Alternatives

I have a line that is used for ADSL and nothing else so I don't care about calling packages or anything other than bog standard line rental.
Is there any point in moving the phone line for the sakes of a couple of quid a month or is it all just more trouble than it's worth if there's ever a problem?

I use madasafish for both 'phone line and broadband. No issues, UK based generally excellent customer service (call within office hours though - outside of office hours it's farmed out abroad).
Not because of any price difference, just because I refuse point blank to deal with BT directly. I don't mind using their systems, but I won't deal with their customer service.
Actually, I'd happily pay more for somebody to deal with BT on my behalf when something goes wrong.

I use TalkTalk, not so much for the minor saving but for the fact I never have to look at a stupid BT invoice again. 4-5 pages of incomprehensible gibberish, and if you have a problem, forget it.paddyhasneeds said:
My broadband is with O2, I just noticed they do line rental for £9.50 a month.
I'm unsure how easy it is to ever escape and get back to BT should you want to.
The lines are still all BT, but they are forced to rent them to other companies. I suppose if you wanted to switch back to BT then replying to one of their 'Oh God please come back we haven't got any customers left' letters would be a start!I'm unsure how easy it is to ever escape and get back to BT should you want to.

A lot depends on Your other services too... I have Sky TV so switched line rental to them as cheaper than BT. If I get a fault on it Sky will sort it out rather than me having to battle the BT offshore dept.
A friend of mine has moved into a flat and the line is not with BT. He wants to set up sky and broadband. Can he go straight to a sky line? Do they charge to switch over like BT do for £115?Cheers
This is good. Just noticed BT are doing 12 months advance line rental for £113, so basically £9.50 a month.
I would have signed up, then I read the small print:
Line Rental Saver. Offer ends 29.10.10. Available to BT Calling Plan customers paying £113.88 for 12 months in advance by debit/credit card – equivalent to £9.49 a month (full price £131.88). Any additional charges to be paid by Direct Debit with e-billing. At least two chargeable or inclusive calls must be made per month to avoid monthly charge of £1.50 being added to your bill. Advance payment is non-refundable. Exclusions and conditions apply.
So if I don't make two pointless, and free phone calls a month (it's a line used only for ADSL there isn't even a phone plugged in), they will charge me £1.50.
WTF?
