Hi There,

I need a small bit of building work done and my usual builder lives quite far away so need to get some other quotes as it is not worth his while + travel to do this job!

I thought about using ratedpeople but get the feeling that it could be a gamble?

Any Feedback greatly appreciated.

Used them a number of times. I really like the way it lets you put up pics, description and things. The people on there seem decent and I haven't had an issue with anyone I've used.

I tend to use it for general stuff (gutter fixes, plastering, painting, etc) rather than larger projects

I'll be honest, I was not impressed with the workmanship of the guy I got from there. However it was my fault I guess, I did not bother to check his references or take any other quotes. DO NOT MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE.

He charged me double what I originally wanted to pay and did an average job to be honest. HE could clearly see that I was not too happy to handover £2000 of my hard earned money and had the audacity to ask me to fill out a form for another site.

Had a couple of jobs done from people on there. Both really good - esp the plasterer we got. 3 long days doing our lounge walls & ceiling for £600 incl materials.

Mixed bag really, below are my current experiences from the last 4 months.

1. Decorator:
- Has done the entire house for very reasonable money.
- Has not complained (too much) about the other trades working on the house.
- Has got us paint where we needed it.
- Has done exactly what we asked for, provided advice.
- WOULD RECOMMEND AGAIN

2. Builder:
- Travelled from the other side of the country to do the job(Fife based, coming over to Glasgow).
- Did an excellent job.
- Have given his details to friends needing work done.
- WOULD RECOMMEND AGAIN

3. TV Aerial Installation:
- Local firm, did a site visit and quoted me.
- Tried to confirm date for installation but kept ignoring communications.
- PANNED HIM IN THE FEEDBACK AS HE DESERVED

4. Electric Gates:
- Local engineering company responded within 2hrs to advert.
- Site visit was this afternoon to develop quotation.
- We'll see ....

You get what you put in really. If you don't check reviews / feedback you run the risk. However, it can be a good way of getting trades in if you don't know the area. But, you have to put good details out to them otherwise they've got next to nothing to go on.

I put in a request for a builder to see if anyone got back to me. Against all expectations, I got one response, a nice guy, quite enjoyed having him round to talk about the house and have a cup of tea with. But he took weeks to come back with a quote, and then more and more time when we corrected this to match the specification we gave him.

So we didn't use him. I could tell by some of his proposed solutions he wasn't getting what I was asking him to do for us, plus if he took this long to just come up with estimates, then I didnt' want to find out how long it took him to finish the work.
