We are having a day of work with volunteers kindly provided by T-Mobile at my children's school. Just looking for a couple of suggestions as to the work we are going to do.

A couple of years ago this was created:

It obviously needs annual attention to keep it in trim and growing in the right direction. It would seem a shame to just let it get out of hand, but I don't really have a clue how to go about this. I think it is willow, and at the moment have no idea of the story behind it however it does look like there was a grant for a "green garden" and once the funding was spent that was it. Can this be diy'ed or do I need to look for specialist help?

We also want to concrete this area as it is suffering erosion and blocking drains further down the car park.

Any suggestions as to how I stop cars from cutting the corner and damaging our new concrete? I was going to add fibres to the mix to reinforce it and dig it out a bit to make the concrete deeper but ideally we want to stop cars crossing it altogether without damaging them.

Cheers

Craig (parent governor)

can't help with the first bit but I'd just lay some tarmac on the second one. You wont stop people driving over it without using big rocks, people can be bds! Admit defeat and let them drive on it!

Yup, willow. Pretty indestructible really, you can cut it back hard to maintain the shape of that woven thing and it won't mind. I've seen logs the thickness of your leg take root in a bucket of water and sprout branches (easy way to grow a bonsai).

Get your secateurs out and get cutting, you could weave some of them back in or if you're feeling creative let them grow on and when they're long enough continue the pattern upward. In a few years you'll have a dome.

Someone in the past has thought 'lets have a willow dome'
However it has to be kept trimmed - and that means ultimatly using ladders/platforms.
Instead decide a sensible height to keep the 'wall' and keep the doorway tidy so the kids can play inside.

And sink a fat wooden bollard in that corner. When mum drives into it she won't scape her car too much

Sensible words, thanks. I might put several chunky posts in but low enough so if they get run over they don't do too much damage, then paint them orange and install a flashing light on each one.
