The temperature dropped a bit last night, making me almost want to put the heating on (it was too late to start a fire). But got me thinking, if the house is this cold in 'summer' in winter its going to cost a fortune to heat.

My dad hass bashed on about space blanket insulation, as my loft has close to NO insulation, same with the walls being as its 200 years old.

What is the best idea to get it upto scratch? 2 layers of space blankets? I think the recommended/required for new builds is 300mm, I imagine for a reason.

I've seen I can get a 50% grant too, which would allow me to double up for free...

Be aware that adding masses of loft insulation can (and regularly does) cause serious problems with loft condensation.

I won't bore you with the details - it's real techy nerd stuff and we're not 100% sure what the mechanism behind the problem is - but do a search on 'Loft Condensation' on this forum if you want to find a thread where we discussed it previously at some length.

If you have none at all even a single layre is going to make a big diffrence, we put a second layre in our loft last year and felt the diffrence straight away.
as for the walls you could insulate the outside, kingspan do plasterboard with insulation attached. http://www.insulation.kingspan.com/uk/index.htm
I found a local commercial recycling yard that deals with big sheets of insulation-10x4ft and up to 150mm thick, if you could get something like that its better than having 3ft of rockwool, very expensive new though.
