Does anyone on here have a thatched cottage? If so, how much do you pay for your yearly insurance. I am in the process of buying one and the quotes are scaring me. I thought it would be about 3 times my current insurance, but they are coming out at 10 times!

The Telegraph recently did an article including insurance on non-standard properties which may help:

Yep, thatched, and listed, which makes it even worse...

Try NFU mutual. You may struggle to get seperate contents insurance with a 'normal' insurer once you mention the word 'thatch'. They get a bit scared.

It's not cheap, but they are a lot cheaper than the specific thatch insurers, the policy is a lot less restrictive (if you have a fire etc) & levels of cover are higher too.

Oak.

Hiscox.

NFU.

Any half decent insurer basically, if you stick with the high street stuff they'll just laugh at you or produce risible quotes as they want to insure 2-up-2-down terraces in Bolton.

Have tried all those places, cheapest quote is coming back at around £2.5K! Its thatched and listed. Current owner reckons she pays around £800, which I could live with, waiting till she is back off hols to find out who with, but just can't believe that amount at the moment based on my research.

I could live with that, but getting r@ped for over £200 every month is too much. How many bedrooms is yours if you don't mind me asking, and do you burn solid fuels?

Only little, it's a 2 bed.

Not currently, but the provision is there (and included in the premium!). Purely because we're renovating, and need to get the chimney lined/stove sorted & its a little way down the to do list at present...

You got my hopes up there smile We are looking at something a bit bigger so that might have a lot to do with it, still can't understand how she is paying £800, and she rents out half of it. Must be some porkies going on.

Something odd going on with your quotes - okay we're not thatched, but 5 bed country property with private water supply, dam, drainage issues, plus two businesses on site covered too and we're a smidge over £1200.

Have a chat with these chaps - www.lycetts.co.uk and see where you get to.

Tried the Malborough branch of Lycetts and they don't deal with Thatch, but are going to put me on to an underwriter, so you never know.

That was my first thought, but the value of the house she has insured, is close to our purchase price.
