buying a place near redhill, and just got a quote from my current insurer - 759 pounds!!! thats for buildings and contents (nothing crazy contents wise)

it is 5 bed victorian property.

just wanted to see what other people pay? any recommendations? is it the age that is making it so high? the postcode area is apparently a B which is second lowest risk.

???

About 22 pounds a month for buildings and contents. Accidental Damage, contents up to 50k, Rebuild up to 500k.

That was on a 2/3 bed coach house from the 1880's. No idea of what vintage you would call that?

Have you tried a price comparison web-site such as GoCompare?

£66 quid for the year.

Buildings and contents with Direct Line for a four bedroom, integral garaged and detached linked house in Belfast.

Seems too good to be true. It was £149 the year before with Halifax.

Over 2k a year yikes just gone up by £40 per month.

I had 1 claim last year and 3 the year before, probably shouldn't have bothered claiming, but figured that's what you have insurance for. rolleyes

Currently trying to get other quotes, but will probably have to put up with this lot until I am claim free for 3 years.

I pay £400 for M&S premium cover, contents only. My first policy so zero no claims discount. Covers my iPhone 4 and my bike when out and about and for accidental damage so I'm pleased with that.

~£41/month, with NFU, for buildings and up to £50k contents. Thatched property in Warwickshire; NFU are by far the easiest insurer to deal with (not requiring inspections by the fire service every year etc), and cheapest as well. It's about the same as I was paying for a 4-bed 1960s detached before moving last year.

Are the very low figures posted here with some sort of immense no claims discount?

As I'm only £145/year for both buildings and contents it could be due to the no claims...haven't claimed or needed to in the 24 years I've owned/lived here. I actually changed insurers last year as all previous times had the insurance through the mortgage company...and now I don't have a mortgage it has been a lot cheaper. I'm also not likely to be flooded which I think helps a lot.

Buildings/contents insurance is very much linked to,
postcode
values insured
previous claims made (NCD)
Everyone will quote different premiums even for the same companies used as it's not the same as comparing a litre of unleaded or a pint of milk.

FWIW, I pay €865 buildings & contents with Foyer and have 15% (max.) NCD.
There.

We have lived in the same 3 bed detached with garage under for 10 years. This year we paid £110, what we noticed is it doesnt pay to be faithful to an insurance company, as every year our premium goes up despite never claiming so we always Go Compare/ Money Supermarket etc.Even the price comparison sites come back with different quotes from the same company, so you have to also compare the comparison sites smile

On my 1960s Semi I pay 202 per year for buildings, contents and full accidental damage cover with Intasure... a lot more than I used to pay, but I have special circumstances due to the job that I do so most insurers won't touch me.

Yup. The reason mine is so much is high rebuild costs and high contents cover. We are not in a bad postcode and not made a claim.
I think for comparison direct line quoted £25 a month .... so that is £45 less than I am paying but I didn't think the free conmtents cover was high enough and it simply didn't cover all the things Hiscox did.

Something like £400 for a 2 bed detached cottage. Not the best, but it was easy to just change the address when we moved. Will be looking into better rates shortly.

about £2.5k p.a.

Hiscox. We switched to them a few years ago because we couldn't get enough coverage from the manistream insurers. We've had to claim twice. The first was for damage from water that overflowed the flashing in the gulley between our twin pitched roofs during a summer storm a couple of years ago. That claim as c. £50k. Then last year, £800 of computer and camera gear was stolen in a burglary at a friend's Tuscan villa where we were staying.
