Electrocuted in rental
Discussion
We rent a house that has a lean to outside to allow access to an outside toilet. It has some pretty shoddy wiring running to the washing machine and to a single light. Theres big gaps against the wall that lets water in. Tonight its raining quite hard. I went out there and noticed a burning smell. I reached up to turn the light off using the pull cord and felt a jolt just as I was touching the (soaking) pull cord.
I am absolutely livid. If my pregnant wife touched it then I dread the consequences.
Obviously the landlord and owner have a duty of care to make electrics safe. I have left a very snotty message on the agents phone this evening but I need to calm down to deal with them in the morning!

At least you didn't play the 'Think of the children' card. Almost, but not quite.
We need:
Laws for people without children
Laws for people expecting children (more stringent)
Laws for people with children (very stringent indeed)
Sorry for coming across grumpy but us non-children folk seem to be getting a raw deal...
'Think of the cat'. Best I can do!

Sorry buddy, pedantry aside yes you are quite correct. Your landlord has a responsibility to ensure that the electrical installation in your property is safe.
To be fair it probably is safe, it's the hole in the roof that is the problem.
You are quite right to kick up a fuss though, any decent landlord would have a man round asap to fix the problem.
As a landlord myself I would also have the electrical system inspected for both my piece of mind as well as yours.
As you said, pregnant women and live electrics don't mix.
Glad to hear you're ok and not in fact dead as I initially feared
