Hi

It is starting to get cold and after trying with some help from a friend I still haven't managed to get my Potterton Profile 50e to light (
he boiler has not run for 3 years as the house was previously vacant).

The gas is on at the stop cock and supply (I have even phoned EON to confirm this).
The programmer and water pump work and the system is full. The fan runs and the "pressure" switch clicks, the spark plug sparks a good spark evertime, the pilot gas solinoid makes a noise (bit strange and this changes occassionally) and there is no pilot light.

I thought it might be the solinoid but it does not want to come of easily. It has the honeywell value unit in my boiler.

Any ideas?

Thanks
Si

Hi mate, if the boiler hasn't been run in 3years you seriously should get a heating engineer to service it to deem it safe. By the sounds of it your gas valve is broken (not opening to let gas through to ignite) but it could be a case of the system needing purged to get the gas through to the boiler. Also you say Eon advised you there's gas in the property but could the emergency control valve at the gas meter be in the off position? If it is again i would advise you get a heating engineer to test the system before turning on as you cant guarantee there's no gas leaks present. Good luck mate.

Si it might be something simple like air in the gas supply to the boiler if the gas has been off at the meter for a long time, in which case it needs purging. Or it might be something a bit more complicated like the solenoid not opening the gas valve. Either ways you really need a Gas Safe engineer mate, this is a bit more than DIY - especially as your particular problem is gas / ignition related.
Hope that helps,
John.

Agree with the above posts. Don't be tempted to fault find yourself, something as simple as removing the burner case panel could turn the boiler into a killer.

Get a Gas Engineer to carry out a Gas Safety Inspection/Landlord Safety Check on the property, there is a lot that can go wrong with three years of inactivity, especially if you have open flued appliances in the property.
