I've just moved into my first place where I pay the bills and have been sorting them all out. One of the first I got was for water. I've set up a direct debit with them and it works out at about £35 per month. Does this seem right to you? I am living on my own in a 1 bed maisonette with no swimming pools or garden to water and have no idea if that is a lot of money to pay or not (seems expensive to me) so any advice would be appreciated. I know I could probably get a meter but if that sounds about right then I wont bother.

Thanks

I'm on rates, not metered, and pay about £650 pa for a 3 bed house, so a little over £50 per month.

I assume its on a meter? Me and the gf pay £23 a month, and use a fair bit of water to be fair - 2 showers a day etc

I pay £17 a month with a water meter for single person usage and I'm not an excessive user...No garden hose, avid shower user etc. biggrin
I would suggest a max of £25/month for a single user

If it's yellow let it mellow, if it's brown flush it down! wink

But, it does sound like you're paying far too much for a one bedroom flat. If possible, ask for a water meter, then if not happy with consumption/cost, revert to an annual charge.

It's just me and a cat but we shower together so he doesn't use any additional water. I'm on the phone to them now, lets see what they say.

Blimey - ours is £70/mth (not metered). I asked them to put one in but they wanted to rip the cloakroom apart so I told them to sod-off.

They said I should apply for a meter to be fitted, if one can't be fitted then they may be able to offer some sort of discount. Fitting and removal (if needed within 12 months) is free, mine is with Thames Water. I'll speak to the landlord.

I'm unmetered but using a water wheel attached to a dynamo, I get free electricity so it's not all bad.

No, just a very average detached house. I think United Utilities are one of the dearest. Even the estimate for metered water was £40/mth and there's just 2 of us in the house.

I used to be paying about £12-15 a month metered in a two bedroom house; that was with a knackered combination boiler meaning I ended up using nearly as much water to get the shower warm every morning as I did actually washing!

Now in a two bed flat and the metered bill seems to be about £10/month. Boiler in this place gets going a lot quicker and it's got one of those toilets with the half-volume flush for when you've only had a slash.

I shower every day but other than that don't use much water so benefit quite a lot from being on a meter.

Unless you have two baths a day you should save a crapload of money. If a meter can't be fitted they will use a rate which will very likely work out cheaper, the pricing is on their website.

Unfortunately I am on a private water main, but the annual charge is capped at Thames Water's average published charge, which is something like £250/yr (2-bed semi, Farnborough).

Yikes it cost me just over two grand to refurbish our well and water pumping system and i can use as much as i want

At that price you could get a borehole and be in a profit after ten years

I can use as much as I want too - I often flush the toilet twice out of spite. wink
