Hello All.

Whilst my Mother is in Italy I am looking after her house.

I say looking after, what I have actually done in fact is empty a very large glass of Red wine all over a very very new, large light coloured carpet. I wont expect any of you to believe a cat at my feet was actually to blame but anyway....

I legged it up the road and grabbed my George extraction machine and got to work but it hasn't removed all traces...

Help - Is there anything that'll work to get the stain out? either through the extraction machine or otherwise!!

Huge thanks in advance - Nick

They say white wine works.

Mind you, when I spilled some white on my cream carpet, putting red on it didnt help.

hire a rug doctor from the local supermarket. incredibly good at cleaning carpets. do test it first - some wool loss may occur.

Twice we've had folk spill red wine on our cream sofa - just glad it wasn't me either time!

Guy we called in said "you haven't put anything on it - like white wine or vinegar have you - as that just makes more work to get that out too?" We hadn't, and he got the lot out some 3 days after the incident (delay due to insurers being slow!)

So, get a pro cleaner in & hope for the best would be my advice.

I fell asleep with a full glass of wine and ended up saturating my girlfriends lounge carpet.

Best tip is don't scrub - just blot and use soda crystals or simple washing up liquid.

Second best tip is go and get a 'red colour' stain remover from the rug doctor stand in the supermarket. Works really well - blotting again.

Apparently soda water (i.e. fizzy mineral water or contents of soda syphon) is the thing to use,

but should have been applied promptly. getmecoat

I have used a spray I bought at the supermarket. I bought it at Sainburys, and has done the job twice for red wine

You can get specialist aerosol spray in a can from carpet shops IIRC which lifts stains, and dab don't rub with an absorbent material

I've tried many things over the years but the only thing that has ever worked was a shampoo for blondes that contained 10% peroxide.

Chem-Dry for me - or claim on the insurance.

Years ago my cat threw up on the hall carpet. I got a Stanley knife, cut out a square of carpet and removed the offending mess. A friend came in and commented on the hole in the hall carpet. I replied 'Yeah, the cat threw up'. I left him thinking I was mad.

What he didn't know was that the carpet was due to be replaced very shortly anyway smile
