I am moving house tomorrow and am taking the current lights from the front room. When taking them down i did not memorise the order that the cables went into the junction. Now i have found this link :

http://www.diyfixit.co.uk/electrics/ceiling-rose-1...

and wired it as per this, but when I turn the power back on I get a small flash and nothing working for these lights or the rest of the flat.
Any Ideas ?

Thanks

You need to provide a bit more info on what is currently in place (pic perhaps). Did you test any of the cables for perm live. Do you have a mains tester at least?

Really ought to be left to someone who knows what they are doing. Not something to be guessed at.

Are the colours the same as that pic? What has prob. happened is one of the blues has lost the brown sheaf that denotes live so you now have a live & neutral togther-hence the wires trying to lose their smoke wink Either that or if 100% all correct is the light fitting metal?

Yes looks the same as that picture.....the blue with brown shelth is fine and i had a look at the switch to make sure it followed back and all looked correct. When i turn the power on @ the consumer unit the hallway lights flash and then nothing

its a cheap plastic fitting from homebase.

If you can get a pic it would help a lot, as it sounds like you've managed to sort out the light circuit when changing the rose over. If you take all the wires out you might be able to test them to see which is the permanent live feed for the circuit and then go from there, but it won't be easy or quick. In fact it may be best to bite the bullet and get a sparky in.

I went to someone's house today to look at their plumbing. Asked if I could put a light on to be told that they didn't work. Fair enough I though, must need a new bulb. I then found out that they didn't work in another room in the house.

Turns out that it wasn't the odd bulb that needed changing, it was that half the lights in the house didn't work! Someone had fitted a new kitchen light and wired it up wrong like yourself. The RCD kept tripping when ever they turned on the lights. A quick rewire of the kitchen light and all was working again for them.
They had had the problem for....over a year without getting it fixed. It's amazing what you can come to live with.
