Advice on windows and any recommendations near Cheltenham?

I need to help my elderly grandparents get some windows fitted, the trouble is that as I've always rented my own homes I have no experience of the trade or determining the best product. Their existing windows are original fitment to the house (50's), single-pane glass and I understand at least one of the frames is badly rotten to the point that its dangerous. Primarily I want to ensure that they end up with a quality product and don't get ripped off.
Can anyone explain what to look for in a product, in particular PVC versus Alu, which is best and should there be a vast cost difference? I want something of absolute high quality as being old folk I'm very conscious of security, thermal insulation, etc. and generally the tendancy for companies to take advantage of them. I'll be handling the payment side of things myself but don't live close enough to supervise or inspect the work as its done, so I need faith in the company doing the work.
