I found a big one in B&Q recently - only about £6. It takes 4x D batteries and has a folding stand built in so you can set it at any angle if required. Don't know how it compares with others but at £6 I'm happy.

How much would you like to spend? wink

www.candlepowerforums.com will have the answer for you.

Or if you'd like a shortcut, there's nary a bad torch on http://www.4sevens.com/ My personnal favourite brand for cost/power is Fenix. Even their keyring torches will give a 6-cell maglite a run for its money. Don't be afraid to go with CR123 batteries either - about £1 each from www.7dayshop.com A 2 cell CR123 with a cree LED will outshine pretty much anything you've seen.... I bought a quad-cree 2 cell and it's brighter than car headlights wink

All the above are good, and the Candlepower forums have loads of info on all aspects of high power torches, upgrades, different batteries/chargers etc....

Also for some cheaper alternatives, worth a look on DealExtreme website. If you don't mind waiting a bit as I believe they ship from China.

Whatever you go for, for high power and decent battery life you need CREE or similar high power LED emitter as the light source. Much more efficient than incandescent, halogen, or Xenon bulbs.

Got one of these;

Rechargeable, hard rubber case and shoulder strap. Has a decent range and far better quality than the cheap ones in the superstores.

Please stop linking to these websites selling powerful torches. I've got too many already and really shouldn't waste anymore money on stuff that "we might use in a power cut one day"

In a crazy moment I bought a 15million candle torch from B&Q. Battery only lasts for 15 minutes but its still useful(at least that what I tell the wife)
