I am trying to work out how many radiators we need (and the size of those radiators) for a new extension. I have the room volume (46), the bu/hour (7038) and the watts (2240) but how do those numbers relate to the size/number of radiators? Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Each radiator should have the rated BTU/Wattage on the packaging. Have a look at These to see what the values are for each radiator. From this you should be able to pick the sizes required.

Here is one from Stelrad for their compact range.

http://www.stelrad.com/uk/docs/compact.pdf

Page 3 has the Heat outputs for different size rads. It varies with different design and manufacturers. So find a rad style you are happy with and you should be able to find some literature online for it.

Places like Plumb Centre usually have charts like this behind the counter to help you.

Sorry about that. Have just tried to update the link but, appears to be something wrong when linking.
The link I provided, should go to wickes.co.uk so, go there then click on the 'Tools Electrical & Plumbing' tab. Then hit the 'Universal Radiators' tab and it should take you to the correct page.
