I've ignored this long enough.. my porch

Has been slowly falling down for the last few years as the posts have rotted / sunk into the floor

So I've been and picked up a couple of props and now, armed with these plus a trolley jack - I'm set to go! More pics later

Good luck with that. Hope it goes well as it looks like a nightmare if it goes at all wrong.

The phrase 'Come down like a ton of bricks' springs to mind...

I think it'll be a 'rip the whole lot down and start from the beginning' job.

I know this is a bit obvious but at the risk et..you won't know what the supporting wood is like under the slates

until you take all the slates down.

There should be some fixing to the main wall that has probably pulled out looking at those pics.

Hmmm... I must admit I wasn't intending investigating quite as far as that... more along the lines of

Jack it level..

Dig out the hole ..

Fill with hardcore and mortar,

Add bricks...

and Robert is your mother's brother ..

Of course I'm sure you're all quite right in that the correct way to do it is to pull it all down and start again but I'm sure I'm not alone in not always doing things 'the right way' At the end of the day it is only decorative and not load bearing in any way (except itself) It's lasted 40 years so far and hopefully it'll now do another few.

prepares for flaming

HaHa

Might have been better just to replace the posts,at least you wouldn't have to

do THAT job again in a year or two!

Replacing the posts would be an option if they were 'off the shelf' treated stuff from B&Q but unfortunately, like all the beams in the place they are very old reclaimed oak timbers and will take some time to source some more. Still, I've got a couple of yeasr to look now! smile

Nice job. I half expected it to collapse when it was jacked upright. Glad it worked out ok though.

Ideally a bit of DPC under the timber and also raising the brickwork up by at least another course from the ground )(min 150mm) will help with keeping the bottom of the timber dry.

Oh, too late...biggrin

It is indeed the OTHER side.. and that is because by the time I came to take the picture the sun was into the camera and (only using phone cam) and I couldn't get any detail . I will take another one in a minute! tongue out

Yeah, yeah, sure.

I was bored just now so decided to do a spot of renovation, too.
