Looking for a definitive answer, I live in a green area of Birkenhead and we have about 6 squirrels living in our trees that are ruining the garden.

If ok to do so what gun / ammo circa £200 (if possible)

There is a green area? It all depends on the size of your garden, I would imagine, as the risk of overshooting could be an issue.

(Where about in Birkenhead? I used to live down in New Brighton by the bowling greens)

In theory yes! but what will the backdrop be? do you have close neighbours? I shoot in my garden (just come in from shooting strangely) but I back onto fields and my neigbour owns the land?

Ive got a Silenced 2.2 Commeta Fenix-400 running at 12 ft.lbs, my ammo is Napier power hunter which seems to do the trick, though my scope is a cheapy and I fancy a new one!

This will do the job(see below), and just in your price range.

Or if you want second hand there is a shop called The Aladins Cave on West Derby Rd, Tuebrook, he always has an extensive range of second hand rifles, I have bought many from him, and you can test fire them upstairs in the shop.

The law states that you can shoot them on your land as long as the "projectile" doesn't leave your land. - This is quite a serious law so please don't dick about with it, put something solid up as a backstop and bait in front of it.

In answer to the which gun part, I would recommend a spring powered gun if you want to stay fairly cheap.

Have a look on Here At the gunmakers such as Webley, SMK & budget, Cometa etc... for some of the cheaper guns

I had one of these when I was about 14, it did a great job back then but it doesn't seem to fit me any more frown

There used to be a shop near Hamilton square that did air rifles, etc. As you walk from the town centre, towards Hamilton square, it was up one of the refurbished roads on the right... I think. Can't remember the road name.

Either market street, or Douglas street, Birkenhead, I think. One of the two.

If you do buy an air rifle and sights, do spend some time getting the sights zero'd for the distance you intend shooting. Squirrels can be tricky to cleanly kill and there's nothing worse than wounding an animal.

How can six squirrels ruin 3/4 acre? We have squirrels but they make no mess.

they can't "ruin" a garden but they will dig up and eat crocuses, tulips and other bulbs but they are rather amusing when they are flying through the trees chasing each other - we've got loads and just live with them.

I used to have a neighbor who used to HATE with a passion anything that came in his garden. Birds, squirrels, cats, foxes, etc. His little diatribe was that these foreign invading animals are ruining his all natural garden... His all natural, artificially manicured, and fertilized garden that is, with his best attempts at growing palm trees outside, etc. He was a proper tool.

Shootings fun I'm sure. But trapping is less effort.

Also if you don't get a clean shot, you leave yourself open to animal cruelty folks getting upset. Instant death in a trap is fine however.
