Possessed touch lamp
Discussion
In my bedroom I have a pair of Next touch lamps. One works perfectly. The other turns itself on at random. I post this just before I nod off safe in the knowledge that it'll do it at least twice tonight, which is a nuisance as it's on my missus' side of the bed but as a light sleeper I'll be the one getting out of bed to turn it off.
Any ideas on the cause?

Could be some sort of interference , does it come on at the same time every night?
I got one of those plasma sphere thingies and everytime anyone touched it the touch lamps in the room would come on. Anything on the same circuit in the house as the lamp sockets could be causing it - heater timer, dishwasher etc..

If that were the case wouldn't my lamp come on too?I got one of those plasma sphere thingies and everytime anyone touched it the touch lamps in the room would come on. Anything on the same circuit in the house as the lamp sockets could be causing it - heater timer, dishwasher etc..
Strangely it didn't come on last night. Only difference to normal was that I didn't have any windows open.

Couldn't you just unplug it?

Socket is behind the bed - getting an extension lead has crossed my mind, but it defeats the object of having a light that's easy to turn on and off.
And I've not had a priest in my bedroom since a were a lad, and I've no plans to have any more of that malarky

Thought I'd resurrect this thread...I was about to do a new post, searched, and realised I've asked this question before.
The touch lamp is still turning itself on when I'm in and out of the house rather annoyingly. I don't want to buy a switch as it defeats the object of having a touch lamp.
A google makes reference to power bumps etc. Would a small surge protector or something similar stop this happening?

Caused by "dirty " power supply.
Your power is spiking, only slightly but enough to cause the lamp to light. It's probably more sensitive to the power surges than the other touch-lamp. A surge protecter is really intended to stop powerful surges from damaging equipment whereas the sort you are getting are quite small.
We have a non-touch Up-lighter that brightens and dims when the wife's tumble-dryer is going and drawing power.
Of course I could be entirely wrong and you have poltergeist activity in your house?

The strange thing is that whilst at any given time lots of electrical gear is turned on, often this happens when we're out of the house and the only thing I can think of that might be turning on and off would be the heaters for a couple of fish tanks (and they use a negligible amount of electricity.)
The wiring in the house is old, I had a sparky round recently and he mentioned something about the circuit breaker type thing etc being old and quoted me a grand to replace it to a normal consumer unit, or some such - I couldn't really keep up - and add some more sockets. Would that be a solution? It needs doing in any case.

Whenever we turn on our bedside lamp (not a touch one) our TV goes mental!
Changes channels about 20 times & volume goes up & down for about 30 secs then everything is ok.
Energy saver light bulb?Changes channels about 20 times & volume goes up & down for about 30 secs then everything is ok.
I had my cable box go loopy with a particular energy saver!
It does so happen to have 1 of these in there. Gassing Station | Homes, Gardens and DIY | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
