The flooring in my second bedroom has seen better days. No matter where you step you get an accompanying creak or squeak.

Anyone have any idea what sort of cost it would be to replace the flooring?

What's there now and what do you want to replace it with?

It's carpeted. I want the carpet pulled up, the floor boards replaced and the carpet relaid. smile

A few sheets of chipboard- only £40 or so.
Cheapest, easiest, quickest

Surely cheaper and easier would be to pull up the carpet, screw down the floorboards, then re-lay?

Only if you like creaking.

Otherwise buy T&G whitewood 22mm, cheap as chips and good stuff smile

Do you think Marf will put it down right?

I'm having all my upstairs floors replaced at the moment, removing the original creaky 8x6 chipboard sheets, making the joists level and then laying tounge and groove boards.

I don't work in meter things I'm afraid, but for a 13ft square room the boards were 250 notes, the screws 20, wood for additional battens 20 and the my builder charged 1.5 days labor @ 120 a day

Total cost 470 per room and worth every penny!

the creaking comes from friction of the nail rubbing on the chipboard, if its glued and srewed this will solve any future problems

Labour cost will be pretty much the same whatever material you use.

Why not pull the old floor and install some nice T&G boards.

These would look lovely secret nailed, sanded and oiled. No need for carpet.

Whip the skirting off first though.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I dont really want wood flooring.

May try gluing and screwing as a first step!

Take the nails out and replace with self-tappers. Worked for me in my modern ply-board box!

Worth trying before anything else - will only cost you for a box of screws too.

Unfortunatly you can only glue the boards (on the tongue) as your laying them. Start off by drilling pilot holes then screwing them down with regular wood/chipboard screws, if you dont drill a piolt hole you'll create a thread on the boards as well as in the joists and the two wont pull tight together. See if that works first before ripping the lot up.

Unless you've got steel floorboards and joists, ignore this and use woodscrews.

Mind your pipes when adding screws.
I'm doing my new floors with T&G boards BTW.

Here is an example of the approximate cost of the materials you require as you asked for in your original post.
I'm not in any way advocating buying from the suppliers posted and would advise you to shop around to get the best deal in terms of cost and quality.
21 of these = £120
1 pack of these = £8
Is that better?

Only a total retard with more money than sense would buy timber from B&Q.
To be fair.

Only buy from a decent timber yard and drive a discount, and get it delivered.
