We've had a decorator in to paint a room, and he hasn't left it in a very good state, and the paintwork has a weird effect on it - much like the paint was too thick when it was being rolled on.

This is what the paint looks like close up.

We're thinking of trying to sort this out ourselves - i've been told I can sand the walls down and then paint again by thinning the paint a little (dulux trade). Is this correct? I know there will be a lot of dust with the sanding so would like to be prepared before we start.

Any advice on fixing this appreciated

It looks like he used a deep pile roller. Were the walls in a good state or were they a bit rough?

If you are not happy, why not talk to the decorator?

Sanding will make a mess and is hard work potentially! Electric sander and a good mask, then tape the room up and vent to the outside is my tip if you really want to lose that roller effect.

Then use a foam roller or very short plie one, or a brush to redo.

The decorator isn't really taking any interest in it unfortunately, and i'm a bit too proud to keep chasing it.

Walls were in quite good condition - definately didn't have any of those kind of marks before the painting.

cheers

I dunno i am a sucker for the deep pile rollers, never ever experianced anything like that while using one.

This is a recent pic of my standards with a deep pile roller, customer never had any complaints.

Did you supply the paint or did he?

I keep looking at that pic and wondering as he painted on a blown vinyl wallpaper or has he painted on to a smooth wall?.

It was a smooth wall. Was plastered about 6 months ago and had 2 mistcoats + 2 solid previously. This last coat was after a few cracks in the plaster appeared and were filled in.

I supplied the paints and they were in the house for about 2 days before work was started.

How can I fix the wall now?

Cheers

Simple enough, they put the paint on heavy with a thick pile roller and never spread/rolled the paint to a suitable thickness.
Give a light sand using a medium-coarse paper then again with a finer paper. No need to thin the paint. Use a quality short pile roller.

After sanding, do I have to wipe down with sugar soap before painting?
