Just after a bit of advice.

I live in a converted farm steading - down a private road, so no street lights. Our place looks directly onto the big/old farmhouse. Between us and them is a wooded embankment - on their property and nice most of the year round, until now when all the leaves come off. The guy who owns the farmhouse is a rich business man who has done a lot of work this year. Including getting a massive treehouse built for his spoilt brats in the embankment. He has also installed what I can only call a floodlight system on his roof. At this time of year all the leaves are coming off and the nights are a lot darker/longer. This lights up our entire street-blazing light into all our rooms. The lights come on at 6pm and stay on right through the night and are still on when I leave for work at 7am. When its pitch black and I stand at our door and look up at them it's like a car with full beam on - they leave you startled.

Can anyone tell me if there is a limit to the power of light he can have on throughout the night? It really is over the top - if I wanted bright lights all night I'd have bought a place next to a street light. Living in the country I've kind of got used to no street lights at night.

I appreciate its his property but why have blazing lights on your roof burning all bloody night? Its like living near Alkatraze. I presume it's to light up the front of his massive property and provide his kids with light to play-I don't grudge him that - but all night?? It's more annoying because evry room in my place points in his direction.

Any advice on this? I'd talk to him but it's hard getting into his property - big gates etc and when I have seen him he's not passed the time of day with his neighbours. The power of light is far too strong and I know this is going to piss me right off through the winter.

Thanks for any advice.

He may not be aware of the problem, invite him round for drinks in the evening, and casually mention it.

I just dont know how he cant be aware of it - but I have thought maybe he doesnt know - but why keep them on all night? I know he owns a big nightclub in a the city and probably has money to burn...but why burn it like that! Ruining the darker nights, because leaves are coming off trees soon it will be even worse.

Report to your concil's environmental health officer - they have the power!

Might be an idea to wait until all the trees are bare and the problem at its worst though.

There's a house a few doors down from me that has an extrior light on all night - can only guess it's a malfunction somewhere....perhaps you could raise that as a possibility?

Unfortunately they aren't telepathic. You better hurry up before they're all redundant!

Yikes yikes

I read that bit and assumed you were my neighbour!!
Similar situation here but in reverse. I am in the big farmhouse and out back, beyond the woods, is a converted steading.

I have a fair bit of floodlighting around the place, particularly at the back, partially for security but also to make sure that walks out to the garage or into the woods with the dogs at night are manageable without a torch. They are not on all the time, but are used when needed and some are on motion sensors. Anyhow, not siding with your neighbour, but it was only after I had been round at my neighbours one evening and was leaving at the same time as Mrs R had put the lights on to take the dogs out at home that I realised what an effect there was. They hadn't said anything in the 3 yrs they had lived there although I was always aware that there was probably a bit of light shining onto/onto their property but didn't quite appreciate that it was akin to the searchlights in Colditz. Happy resolution for all was with me spending 1/2 hr up various ladders adjusting the angle of the different lights whilst Mrs R stood next door telling me when it was dark again. Wish they had said earlier.

Hmmm-wish you had been the man in question...I'd have just asked for a shot of one of your nice motors and told you to keep lights on 24/7 !!

My mother had a similar problem to this, they are a bunch of gutless fannys who wouldn't say boo to a goose. Were no help for her whatsoever.
