I live next door to a lovely country pub. It is about 100 metres from my back door, with a car park between us. 9 months ago, they parked a 40 foot long trailer in the car park. I asked them about it, and it is being used as temporary storage for the land lady's carpentry business (it's full of wood and tools).

So the trailer is about 40 feet long, 10 feet high and eight feet wide. It's horrible. They don't plan on moving, so can anyone comment if planning ought to be required for this? I have a feeling there are change of use implications (its a pub with a car park, not a trailer storage place or a carpentry business) but what about the trailer itself?

I'd rather have a clue about the facts before contacting the council, which I'd rather not do... I have spoken to the neighbour, and it's been temporary (for 9 months) which his business picks up....

Thanks!

It would be terrible if some kids broke into it and set it ablaze, wouldn't it? whistle

It's pretty well screened by hawthorn in the summer... the winter is another matter....

Go in for a pint or two and cheekily mention that you're expecting discount on future drinks/meals whilst the eyesore is still there?

Depends how well you get on with the landlord/lady I suppose

Tried all that... the answer is that its only temporary, her boyfriend couldn't afford to pay the rent on his workshop so is using the trailer until business picks up.
I fear a complaint is the only way to go, I'm just not sure if what they have done is allowed or not?

Some of our clients formerly parked similar trailers at a plant nursery and a quarry and used them for storage. Not having dealt with the cases I don't know the exact ins and outs, but the planning Officers got on the case an eventually the trailers had to be moved. Perhaps speak to the Planning Officers, but for Christ's sake don't ps off a pub landlord (presuming you like the pub and do drink/want to continue drinking there).

IIRC they can be made to move it, but there's no distance it has to be moved.
Its the same way you see 'mobile' field shelters on skids with a tow bar, they're moveable but not really moved IYSWIM

Who owns the pub, themselves or a pubco.

I imagine a pubco would not like that on the premises,so maybe a complaint to them would get it moved.

Fact is you would have more chance of getting rid if the chap was running a haulage business and parking it there, then you could have complained to the local traffic area office.

This.

Personally I would not complain - your life could become quite miserable.

I'd be tempted to ask 'any news on the trailer yet?' when you go in for your frequent medicinal ale. They'll soon get the message and hopefully will try to do something about it.

Not complaining is my preference too. They own it themselves and have spent 10 years doing it up, and I'd happy to try to support them. However, it is an eyesort and a blot on the landscape, and very close to my dining room and patio!
I think I'll try to do the right thing and not complain. And then torch it if it doesn't move....

Alternatively, you could tackle the problem from the other direction and find either a cheap workshop for the carpenter, or a corner of a farmyard/industrial premises at (hopefully) low cost. It might be they haven't tried very hard to find other places for it to sit.

I think you would would struggle going through the planning process!

Considering Its a trailer, every 2 weeks he could move it out of the car park and reverse back in!

The only way you could pin them down is if he was running a business from there!

As said above you don't really want to fall foul of your local. Maybe spring time ask them if they could park it a bit further away from you property so you can enjoy the evening sunshine!

Is there room for him to rotate it through 90 degrees so you only have to look at the end of it?

As above, or is there anywhere else in the car park it could go? Or could it be painted or covered to disguise it a bit? I fully agree with your opinion of not going in 'all guns blazing' - it's just not worth it!

Who owns the pub? Is it owned by a brewery?

Multiple anonymous complaints/comments to the brewery might achieve something.......

"I went to the Red Lion last week - a lovely pub, but who put that awful trailer there? It really spoils the look of the place" etc etc
