I believe it was most widely used in the 60s and 70s. I'm shortly undertaking some work on a 1934 house - it's totally original apart from being rewired and having had GCH put in back in the 70s

Am I likely to come across any asbestos apart from perhaps in the fireplaces or plumbing?

IIRC you need to watch out for red woolly pipe insulation.
If you meet this type of asbestos, you need to be very very careful.
If in doubt get it tested.

Asbestos has been around for 1000's of years so its not a surprise if you do find it.

Its likely to be anywhere where it likely to offer thermal protection; fire breaks, boilers, roofing, gutters, fascias and soffits, mastic around windows, bakealite products, old ironing boards etc etc

The HSE do some good booklets, email me and can send you a copy over on monday
