Guy’s quick insulation question. I am doing some top up insulation in my loft with some B&Q stuff that is wrapped on one side with foil and plastic on the other. Is the foil surpossed to point down towards the ceiling or up into the loft. The instructions don’t indicate?

Thanks in advance

Foil down, it reflects the heat.

aren't you supposed to peel the foil off?

Surely it doesn't matter, one way you're reflecting the heat back in, the other way you're reflecting the heat back out.

Thats why I would have thought Foil down, plastic side up.

Heat doesn't mean hot, reflecting heat away can mean reflecting cold away.

I would put it facing inwards though.

A quick google seems to say UP as it also acts as a vapour barrier.

Is it rolled? If so then there will only be one sensible way to lay it straight from the pack wink

Is your wallpaper back to front ? Is your carpet face down ?

Surely the OP wants to keep the heat in his property ? and not just warm his loft up ?

There's no such thing as cold, it's simply the absence of heat. It can't radiate...

No, however should I be confused in which way to lay a carpet or hang wallpaper, I'm sure a quick google would point me in the right direction. Just like in this instance where a couple of manufacturers web site state the foil is a vapour barrier and the plastic is not - hence foil side up.

If you disagree enough, go find some evidence to support your stance and post it up!!

No need the evidence is in the ops Question, one side is foil one side is plastic.

Love the way everyone has to disagree, I will just keep laying the right way up as I have been for over 15 years maybe Celotex know nothing about insulation and they have it wrong.

Stop being so defensive lmao

The OP is "topping up" his insulation, you dont lay foil down on top of existing insulation.
Take it from someone whose been in the industry for 28 yearssmile

Plastic doesn't completely nullify the reflective qualities of foil, surely?

Is the foil shiny on both sides? Cooking foil is not and many people use it shiny side out - which is incorrect.

Shiniest side towards the thing you want to keep warm, in both cases
