I have just bought 5 x 25kg bags and popped it in the garage. Last year the council grit bins at the top of our hill were filled so infrequently, and their gritters and ploughs refused to come down the hill, that I was stuck here for almost a week. I have also laid in enough bread etc in the freezer to last a week, got a load of bottled water, a generator and some long life milk.

Anybody else got paranoid winter plans?

I was looking at all the expensive snow blowers/dozers etc. Heathrow has just bought and was showing off - after the problems with disruption last year. I expect that guarantees they won't see a flake of snow until 2019.

Yep - bought a Range Rover Vogue for the snow / extreme rain / gales etc.

For everything else, there's a Tuscan!

Yup, our driveway has a steep bank to get up onto the road, so we grit (or rough sand when we ran out of grit) just to get off the driveway.

I put a set of mud and snow tyres on the wifes Freelander so I can borrow it to get to work if it is bad.

Assume everyone is aware salt can pit concrete.

Better than sliding down your driveway into a bus thoughsmile

Mix the rock salt up with sharp sand, makes it go further and the sand will aid traction.

I recall that is why the council version is sand coloured?

Bought 75kg of grit / rocksalt last week. At the moment it's just weighing down the boot of the car, ruining the fuel economy and making it look like I've lowered the back end!

I noticed Costco have large bags in at £2.99 a go at the moment and am tempted to stock up as the council forget the one bin we have to share with people who take it to do their drives and don't consider the very steep hill that usually generates a few accidents when it's icy.

I'm half tempted to leaflet drop the whole street and suggest we all buy a couple of bags and stock up on shovels (my new snow shovel came last week to the amusement of my colleagues - try and get one when it snows chaps!) so that we can all do our bit to clear the whole road. I'm not sure many of them will take part though, it's a fairly anonymous estate.

Last winter we had all and sundry emptying the bins and then those at the fot of the hill were stuck. I see the council have wired it shut but that wonlt take much cutting. The 400L empty bins are abiout £65 if you buy them.

I cought my bags fro JTK for £3.99

Don't have a JTK or Costco near me - builder's merchants or any DIY store?

We got ours from Wickes last year and it wasn't expensive at all.

Yep, but the problem with the salt/sand combination is that it gets washed into the gullies and blocks the drains. The salt dissolves but the sand doesn't.
