Friend just gave me a surplus raspberry plant. It's just the 'stub' or whatever you call it from the nursery.

I need to know where to plant it. How much space will it take and should it be paired with something else?

Cheers smile

1 cane - how generous! Pretty simple, says it all: http://www.gardenersworld.com/plants/features/tast...

It was just the one left over from her planting!

I'm struggling for space a bit, I'm going to need to rip something else out to make space. hmm.

Once established they spread underground and pop up everywhere, waste of time growing 1 cane unless you let it develop into a decent sized row or clump. I'd give it at least a 1x2m bed and stick it in the middle. And buy it some friends if you aren't very patient like me!

You can encourage spread by not chopping it down one winter. We didn't look after ours properly one year while mum was sick and the old plant fruited and new ones came up like gangbusters. Yield was down that year but had loads of plants for the next!

I ripped out an ugly non-food-related tree and put the raspberry in a spot where it should get good sun but still reasonably protected from wind. It's sharing with my precious strawberry patch smile.
